The Artist's Path (The Artist's Way) was published in English in 1992, but the good news is that it has been available in Spanish for years. Here I give you all the options: where to buy it, how much it costs, which edition to choose, and whether you should consider alternative formats such as ebook or audiobook.
The main publishers in Spanish
Editorial Aguilar / Penguin Random House
The most common publisher in Spain is Aguilar, which is part of Penguin Random House. This is the "standard" edition that you will find in most bookstores. It is in softcover, has approximately 350-380 pages, and the retail price (RRP) is generally between 15-18 euros in Spain.
This edition is well edited, easy to read, and all practices are clearly explained. It is what I would recommend for most people.
Other publishers
In Latin America you will also find editions from local publishers (Vergara, Martínez Roca, etc.). Prices vary depending on the country: in Mexico it is around 200-250 pesos, in Argentina between 3,000-4,000 pesos, and so on depending on the area. The content is identical, only the editorial changes.
Available formats and comparison
Soft cover (pocket format)
This is the most popular version. Pros: affordable price, comfortable to read, requires no technology, can be easily underlined and marked. Cons: It takes up space at home, it takes time to arrive if you buy online.
Approximate price: 15-18 euros (Spain), 180-250 pesos (Latin America).
Hard cover
Less common, but some publishers offer it. Pros: Durable, looks pretty on the shelf, ideal as a gift. Cons: More expensive, heavier to read in bed or move around with.
Approximate price: 25-30 euros (much more expensive).
Ebook
Available on platforms such as Amazon Kindle, Google Play, Kobo. Pros: instant (you download it and read it in minutes), cheaper, convenient if you read on a tablet or phone. Cons: Some prefer the tactile experience of paper, it can be more difficult to underline and create your own notes.
Approximate price: 9-12 euros (generally 30-40% cheaper than paperback).
"The important thing is not the format. The important thing is to do the practices. Choose the one that allows you to be more consistent."
Audiobook
Available on Audible (Amazon), Scribd, Audiobooks Plus. Pros: perfect if you drive, exercise, or do housework; Excellent for people who learn best by listening. Cons: requires subscription, is not ideal for doing practices (writing while listening is complicated).
Approximate price: from 10-15 euros if you have a subscription, or you can buy it directly for 19-25 euros.
My opinion on formats: For The Artist's Way I recommend paperback or ebook. The audiobook is fine to understand the concept, but the practicals require writing, so it is better to have the book at hand. If you have the budget, buy it on paper: you will need to write in the margins, underline, mark exercises that you want to repeat.
Where to buy it
Main online platforms
- Amazon.es (Spain) / Amazon.com.mx (Mexico): Large stock, fast shipping, variety of formats. They usually have offers.
- Book House: Trusted brand in Spain, good customer service, fast shipping, in-store pickup option.
- Kindle (Amazon): If you prefer ebook, it is the simplest platform. Immediate reading.
- Kobo: Alternative to Kindle for ebook, compatible with many readers.
- Audible: For audiobooks if you have a subscription.
Local bookstores
If you prefer to support independent bookstores, you can go in person or call to request it. Most bookstores can order any title in 1-2 weeks. Advantage: You support local, you can meet the bookseller, sometimes they have specific discounts. Disadvantage: It takes longer, sometimes it costs more.
public library
Free option: Many libraries have The Artist's Path. You can borrow it to "try" before you buy. Although if you really do the internship, you will want your own copy so you can write, underline and consult without rushing to return it.
"Don't wait for the perfect time to start. Buy the book tomorrow and start the day after."
International editions and the original English version
If you speak English and prefer to read in the original language, the book is available in English everywhere (much cheaper, because the first edition is from 1992). Pros: cheaper, Julia Cameron's "voice" is clearer. Cons: If your level of English is not very high, reading will be slower.
Many people buy both: the Spanish version to do the practices (with the cultural context), and the English version to compare explanations.
Supplementary Materials You May Want
The Artist's Way Workbook
There is a complementary "workbook". It has more exercises, more pages to write, additional reflections. It's worth it? It is not essential. The main book has everything you need. But if you want to do the deeper work and have the budget, it is a good complement.
Morning Pages Notebook
Julia Cameron has published specific notebooks (Morning Pages Workbook) to write your three pages. It's worth it? It depends on you. A regular blank notebook works perfectly. But some find it helpful to have a dedicated notebook to create the ritual.
Apps and online resources
There are apps and online platforms to track practices, but they are not necessary. A notebook and the book are enough. If you are very digital, you can write the Morning Pages in a Google Drive document.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best edition in Spanish?
Aguilar's (Penguin Random House) is the most available and is well edited. If you find another one, it doesn't make much difference — the content is identical. Choose the one you find available with fast shipping.
Is there a difference between the 90s edition and the new ones?
The content is practically identical. Some new editions include an updated foreword by Julia Cameron. It's not a significant change, but it's a plus if you find it.
Can I download the PDF for free?
The book is under copyright, so illegal downloads are not recommended. But it's relatively cheap — between 9-18 euros — so it's accessible. If you're really on a budget, try your local library.
Is the ebook worth it if I don't have an e-reader?
You can read ebooks on your phone or tablet (with apps like Kindle, Kobo, or Apple Books). The question is: are you comfortable reading on a screen for 20-30 minutes every morning? For some people yes, for others it is tiring. Try first if you can.
Should I also buy the workbook?
No need to start. Buy the main book and see how it goes. If after 4 weeks you want to explore more, then consider the workbook. Don't speed up by spending on everything.
How much will I spend in total if I want to do the entire route?
Minimum: the paperback book (15-18 euros) + a nice notebook (5-10 euros) = 20-28 euros. If you want optional: workbook (15 euros), audiobook (15 euros), etc. But the minimum works perfectly.
My final recommendation
If you don't know where to start: buy Aguilar's softcover edition on Amazon or Casa del Libro. It will arrive quickly, the price is fair, and it is easy to use. If you want to start tomorrow, buy it as an ebook on Kindle.
Don't look for the "perfect edition" that doesn't exist. The perfect edition is the one you have in your hands now, that you start reading today, and that you practice tomorrow.
