To write by hand you need about 500 lux on the paper, with a color temperature of 3000 to 4000 K in the early morning and a color rendering index (CRI) greater than 90. Place the lamp on the opposite side of your dominant hand so as not to cast a shadow on what you write, and always add soft ambient lighting: a lamp alone in a dark room strains the eyes.
Let's start by dispelling a myth: light does not harm your eyes
There is a widespread belief, inherited from our grandmothers, that reading or writing in low light damages your eyesight. The ophthalmological evidence does not support it. Working in the dark does not structurally damage the eye or accelerate myopia in adults. What it does produce is visual fatigue: the ciliary muscles struggle to focus, you blink less, the ocular surface dries out and stinging, temporary blurred vision and diffuse discomfort appear on the forehead.
It's an important distinction because it changes the question. It is not about protecting eyes from irreversible damage. It's about ensuring that twenty-five minutes of handwriting at dawn doesn't end in a feeling of exhaustion that your brain will associate, morning after morning, with the practice you're trying to build.
And there is a real problem there. The habit is fragile in its first weeks. If each session ends with a physical discomfort—hand pain, back pain, eyestrain—the part of you that makes excuses will find a great one. Fixing the light costs between zero and forty euros and eliminates one of those excuses forever.
How many lux do you really need?
Lux measures the amount of light that reaches a surface. For handwriting, European workplace lighting standards (the EN 12464 family) recommend around 500 lux above the task plane. For occasional reading, 300 is enough. For fine detail work, technical drawing or sewing, they go up to 750 or 1000.
As a mental reference: a living room illuminated with a typical ceiling lamp is around 100-150 lux on the table. A well-lit office, 500. A cloudy day outside, 1000-5000. A sunny day, between 30,000 and 100,000. The scale is logarithmic and so is our perception, which is why a room that seems well lit to you may be a fifth of what the task needs.
You don't need to buy a lux meter. Virtually any phone has an ambient light sensor and there are free applications that read it. They are not metrologically accurate, but they distinguish perfectly between 120 and 500 lux, which is the only distinction you need to make.
The practical trick, if you don't want to measure anything: put your open hand on the paper, with the lamp on and the light in the room as you normally have it. If the shadow of your hand on the sheet of paper has a hard, black edge, you have a single point source and little ambient light. If the shade is soft and grayish, you are fine.
Color temperature at six in the morning
Here two criteria intersect that pull in opposite directions, and that is why the popular answer—cold white light to concentrate—is probably wrong for this specific practice.
The first criterion is visual performance. Colder light (5000-6500 K), with more blue component, slightly improves acuity and increases alertness. It is the reason why offices go towards neutral white.
The second criterion is what morning pages are. Cameron deliberately places them in the state of sleep, in that still half-awakened brain where the internal censor has not yet registered. Intense blue light first thing in the morning activates the circadian system and wakes you up. That's exactly what no you want: you want to write from dream, not from lucidity.
My recommendation, therefore, is warm-neutral: between 3000 K and 4000 K. Enough contrast to see the letter without effort, little enough not to tear you away from the mental state that makes the exercise useful. If your lamp is temperature-adjustable, start at 3000K and go up to 4000K as the morning progresses.
The cold light of 6500 K has its moment, and it is later: the eleven o'clock work session, the revision of a text, the correction. Not the emptying of the head when waking up.
The CRI: the number that no box stands out
The color rendering index (CRI or Ra) measures how similar colors in that light are to how they would appear in sunlight. The scale goes up to 100. Many cheap LED bulbs are around 70-80, which means the colors look dull, dirty, slightly wrong.
For writing black text on white paper, the CRI hardly matters. Whatever else you do at that table—watercolor your artist appointment, sketchbook, review a printed photo, even appreciating the color of a blue-black ink—matters a lot. And there is an unintuitive side effect: under low CRI light, the eyes work harder to discriminate details, and fatigue appears sooner.
Look on the box for CRI ≥ 90, or Ra 90+. It usually comes in small print and makes the bulb two or three euros more expensive. It is the best euro you will spend on your table.
And one more tip: avoid light bulbs with noticeable flicker. A quick trick to detect it is to record the lamp with slow motion on your cell phone. If horizontal bands appear in the video, the bulb blinks. That blinking, even if you don't see it consciously, is associated with visual fatigue and headaches in sensitive people.
Where to put the lamp (the mistake of 90% of people)
If you are right-handed, the lamp goes to you left. If you are left-handed, to you right. And slightly in front, not behind. This is all you need to know, and yet almost everyone puts the flex on the side that is closest to their hand, which is the side of the writing hand. Result: the hand projects its own shadow on the line it is writing, the eye compensates by moving closer to the paper, the back curves and after fifteen minutes the neck hurts.
Height matters almost as much. A lamp that is too low puts the specular reflection of the paper directly into your eye (glossy paper and glossy inks aggravate this). Too high a light illuminates the room and not the task. The sweet spot is between 40 and 50 cm above the plane of the table, with the arm inclined at about 30-45 degrees.
And then there's the rule that no one follows: also turn on an ambient light. A bright flexo in a black room creates a brutal contrast between the sheet and the environment. Every time you look up, the pupil has to dilate and contract again. This cycle repeated for twenty minutes is one of the most common causes of night and morning eye strain. A dim floor lamp in the background, or even the hallway light on, solves this.
Contrast rule of thumb: The area around the task should be about one-third the luminance of the task, and the far background about one-tenth. Don't measure it: just don't write in a pool of light surrounded by total darkness.
Specific lamps that comply

The zero euro solution. The light bulb you already have, in the lamp you already have, placed on the correct side, plus the ceiling light on. If you do just this, you have solved 70% of the problem. Start here and don't buy anything for a month.
Classic articulated arm flexo (€30-70). The family of architect-type lamps: Ikea Tertial, Anglepoise if you have the budget to spare, any decent clone. Advantage: free positioning, you choose the bulb and therefore the CRI and temperature. This is what I recommend by default.
LED desk lamp with wide bar (€40-90). BenQ, Xiaomi, Yeelight and the like. The elongated bar diffuses light over a wide area, reducing shadows and reflections. Many allow you to regulate color temperature from 2700 to 5700 K, which is exactly what this routine asks for. Check the CRI before purchasing: several low-end ones do not reach 90.
Sunrise lamp or light alarm clock (€60-150). Different and very interesting category for morning pages: instead of turning on all at once, increase the intensity progressively for twenty or thirty minutes before your time. In winter, when you wake up in the dark, simulate the dawn. The evidence for its effect on awakening is reasonable, although more modest than the marketing promises. If you get up at six in December and have a hard time, it's worth a try.
The special case of winter
From November to February, in European latitudes, morning pages are written literally at night. There is no natural light to aspire to and the body knows it: melatonin is still circulating, body temperature is at its lowest point and everything in you is asking to go back to bed.
In this context, the strategy changes. The light from the table is still warm (3000 K, so as not to break sleep), but it is worth adding after of writing a brief exposure to bright, cold light: open the blinds even if it is gray, go out to the balcony for a moment, or use a 10,000 lux phototherapy lamp for twenty minutes while you have breakfast. That order—writing in warm darkness, waking up in cold light—takes the best of both.

And a note that goes beyond the topic of this article but that deserves to be said: if the darkness of winter not only makes you lazy but also sinks your spirits steadily year after year, that has a clinical name and treatment. It deserves a conversation with your doctor, not a better lamp.
Thirty second checklist
Before you sit down tomorrow, review this. You don't need to buy anything to fulfill five of the six points.
1. The lamp is on the opposite side of your dominant hand. 2. There is a second light on in the room, although it is dim. 3. You don't see the bright reflection of the light bulb on the paper when you look straight on. 4. The shadow of your hand on the sheet of paper is soft, not black-edged. 5. The light is warm, not like an operating room. 6. The bulb says CRI 90+ somewhere.
If all six are met, you have eliminated eye strain from the list of reasons why one day you will stop writing.
