Qué es Parc del Laberint d'Horta y de dónde viene
The Parc del Laberint d'Horta is the oldest historic garden in Barcelona — even before the modern city itself. Created in 1791 by the Marquis Joan Antoni Desvalls as a neoclassical garden on his private estate. The upper, romantic part was added in the 19th century. The central labyrinth – 750 meters of walks between three-metre-high cypress hedges – remains the original. The garden passed to the city council in 1971 and was opened to the public with limited capacity: maximum 750 people at a time, to preserve the space.
Why go — and what's the purpose of your appointment with the artist?
The Laberint is one of the few gardens in Barcelona where you can genuinely get lost. Not metaphorically: literally. The cypress maze is real. If you've been lost for months without getting lost somewhere — without knowing where to go — this is exactly what your head needs.
How to take advantage of it (concrete practice)
Go on a Wednesday afternoon — it's free that day. Bring a book and notebook. Go through the maze slowly. When you leave, go up to the neoclassical pavilions at the top and sit on one of the stone benches overlooking the garden. The silence here is of a different type — it is not the silence of the countryside, it is not the silence of the center. It is a silence from the 18th century, strange. Take out the notebook. Writes. You'll learn that not all artist appointments need to be at the resort.

Why this place connects with Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way
The practice of the appointment with the artist that Julia Cameron prescribes in The Artist's Path has a principle: creativity needs to be fed before I can produce. Cameron calls it 'filling the well.' The metaphor is exact: if it doesn't rain, the well runs dry. If you don't expose your brain to non-work stimuli once a week, your ability to generate new ideas quietly declines, week by week.
Parc del Laberint d'Horta es un sitio ideal para una cita con el artista porque cumple las tres condiciones que Cameron pide: It takes you out of your routine (a place other than your work and home), does not require production (you are going to receive, not create), and exposes you to curated stimuli (someone with judgment decided this was worth watching). Three conditions, an hour or two, once a week. It is probably the practice with the best mental ROI that you are going to add to your routine.
If you haven't taken the course yet, this is the place to start. Your Artist's Path is the free 12-week program that applies Julia Cameron's method to your life — including two hours a week blocked off on your calendar for appointments like this. More about the course at the end of the post.
