Week 04 ยท Welcome

Recovering Integrity

Welcome to Week 4. This is the famous "reading deprivation" week โ€” and yes, we'll get to that. But before, something important: this week we look at our life with X-ray vision. Where are we out of alignment with who we really are?

Integrity, in Cameron's sense, doesn't mean morality โ€” it means integration. The pieces of your life fitting with the pieces of your soul. When they don't fit, no amount of creativity gets through the friction.

"Pay attention to the texture of your hours. Notice which ones feed you and which ones drain you."

โ€” Julia Cameron
Key concept

Reading deprivation week

Yes, Cameron asks you to stop reading for a week. No books, no newspapers, no long articles, no social media feeds. Sounds extreme โ€” and that's the point.

We read so much, scroll so much, consume so much that we never give ourselves the silence in which our own ideas can be heard. This week we cut off the input to make room for the output.

What will you do instead? Whatever appears when there's nothing to read. Walk, cook, draw, dance, daydream. Be bored. Boredom is the soil of creativity.

What to expect

Day 1-2: Restlessness

You'll reach for your phone constantly. The hand keeps moving. Notice it without judgment.

Day 3-4: Withdrawal

Real discomfort. You might feel anxious, irritable. This is detox.

Day 5-7: Space appears

Suddenly there's silence inside you. Ideas float up. You see things you hadn't seen in months.

After the week: Reset

You'll choose more carefully what you let in. Your attention has been returned to you.

Essential practices

This week, the foundation continues

Morning Pages and Artist Date continue. To them this week we add the reading fast. Substitute: walk, listen, look, create, rest.

Week 04 ยท Inner work

This week's exercises

Exercise 1 โ€” The life inventory

Make four columns: Body โ€” Mind โ€” Heart โ€” Spirit.

In each column, list what's nourishing you and what's draining you. Be honest. No one has to see this.

Then ask yourself: what would happen if I removed the worst drainer from each column this month?

Exercise 2 โ€” Areas out of alignment

List 5 areas of your life where there's friction between what you do and what you believe. Examples: a job that drains you, a relationship that doesn't nourish you, a habit you don't endorse.

For each one, propose a small adjustment. Not a revolution. Just one degree of correction.

Exercise 3 โ€” Reading fast log

Keep a daily log this week of what came up when you replaced reading with something else.

Note any idea, image, urge or memory that surfaced. By the end of the week you'll have a small treasure of raw creative material.

Affirmations

Choose 3 of these affirmations and write them every morning after your Morning Pages.

"My time is sacred and I protect it."
"Boredom is fertile ground for me."
"What I let in shapes what I let out."
"My life can be a work of integrity."
Guided reflections

Questions to explore

Take your time. There's no rush. Write what comes from the heart.

What is the area of your life most out of alignment with who you are?

What would you do with the time you currently spend reading or scrolling?

If you could remove one drainer this month, which would it be?

When was the last time you let yourself be bored โ€” really bored?

What is your soul telling you in the silence?
