How is burnout different from creative block?
creative block is I want but I can't. Creative burnout is I don't want to anymore, and the idea of trying exhausts me. Energetically they are opposites.
Blockade is treated with mobilization: morning pages, artist quote, starting small. Burnout is treated with active rest: do little, receive a lot, do not force production.
What are the signs of creative burnout?
Four clear signs.
Signs of creative burnout:
- Cynicism: what used to excite you now seems silly to you
- Loss of pleasure: you no longer enjoy the works of others either
- Physical exhaustion: just thinking about creating makes you tired
- Depersonalization: "I don't recognize myself as an artist"
What is the recovery plan in 12 weeks?
Adapted from the Cameron method for exhaustion phases.
12 week recovery plan:
- Week 1-4: zero production, only reception (museums, light reading, music)
- Week 5-6: 2-page morning pages — not 3
- Week 7-8: weekly artist quote — reception only
- Week 9-10: micro-production 20 min/day — no target
- Week 11-12: full pages + quote + light production
What to avoid during creative burnout?
Five things that make the situation worse.
Pitfalls during burnout:
- Try to start big project: worsens the feeling of incapacity
- Compare yourself to your productive peak: cruel and false
- Force inspiration with substances: alcohol, cannabis — soothes for a day, aggravates for a week
- Request feedback now: you will process it as criticism
- Announce your return: external pressure delays recovery
