Recovering Strength

Week 8. You're past two thirds of the journey. By now resistance may have appeared — that strange force that wants you to abandon when you're about to make a breakthrough. This week's topic.

Resistance isn't a weakness. It's a universal sign that you're close to something important. The art is not in not feeling it. The art is in working through it.

Key concept

The shape resistance takes

Resistance is shape-shifting. Sometimes it dresses up as procrastination ("I'll start tomorrow"). Sometimes as drama ("now isn't the moment, my life is too complicated"). Sometimes as self-criticism ("what I'm doing isn't good enough"). Sometimes as escape (cleaning the house, scrolling, eating).

All these forms have something in common: they appear precisely when you're closest to doing the work. The intensity of the resistance is proportional to the importance of the work.

Doing it tired, scared, badly

Cameron repeats a phrase that has saved many people: "showing up is enough". You don't need to feel inspired. You don't need clarity. You don't need to do it well. You just need to show up.

Sit at the desk for 20 minutes even if you write rubbish. Pick up the brush even if you don't know what to paint. Do the morning pages even on the day they feel pointless. Consistency beats inspiration, every time.

Procrastination

The most refined form of resistance. The longer you postpone, the bigger the topic looms.

Self-criticism

It dresses up as quality control. Often it's fear of finishing.

Drama

Convenient crises that consume your time. Notice when you're choosing chaos.

Escape

Compulsive cleaning, scrolling, snacking. Anything but the page or the canvas.

This week's exercises

Exercise 1 — Mapping your resistance

What is your favourite form of resistance? Procrastination, drama, escape, criticism, illness? Be specific.

Then ask: when does it appear? What is it protecting you from? What is on the other side?

Exercise 2 — Showing up small

Choose one tiny daily action related to your creative project. Twenty minutes. Three sentences. One sketch.

Do it every day this week. The size doesn't matter. The continuity does.

Exercise 3 — Naming what you fear

Complete 10 times: "I'm afraid that if I really commit to my creativity…"

The deepest fears are usually irrational and powerful. Naming them on paper takes away a lot of their charge.

Choose 3 of these affirmations and write them every morning after your Morning Pages.

Take your time. There's no rush. Write what comes from the heart.

What's the shape your resistance most often takes?

What creative project are you avoiding right now — and what is it really about?

What would you create if you knew you couldn't fail?

Who in your life supports your work — and who unconsciously sabotages it?
