Week 09 ยท Welcome
Recovering Compassion
Week 9. By now you've probably hit a dry patch. A day, a week without flow. This is universal. Every artist experiences it. This week we make peace with it.
Cameron names it without sugarcoating: creativity has cycles. Just as the body has seasons of rest, the soul has fallow times. The mistake isn't experiencing them โ it's interpreting them as failure.
"You can starve in the desert or learn to plant. Either way, the desert is part of the journey."
โ Julia Cameron
Key concept
The desert is part of the map
Every artist has dry seasons. Some last days. Some last months. Some last years. The temptation in those times is to push harder, force, punish yourself. The wisdom is the opposite: rest, recover, refill.
Cameron suggests something we resist: treat yourself with the compassion you would give a beloved friend. If your friend was going through a dry creative time, would you tell them they're failing? You'd tell them to take care of themselves.
Perfectionism, the silent killer
More than any external censor, the inner perfectionist is what kills most projects. The voice that says "this isn't good enough" before something is barely finished.
Perfectionism isn't a high standard โ it's fear dressed up as quality. This week we replace it with something more sustainable: standards of completion, not of perfection.
Compassion with the cycle
The dry season isn't failure. It's part of the rhythm. Don't punish yourself for it.
Permission to be imperfect
Done is better than perfect. Almost always.
Restorative rest
Sleep, walk, look at sky. The creative system needs idleness to function.
Soft work
When you can't create big, create small. A sentence, a sketch, a doodle. Keep the connection.
Week 09 ยท Inner work
This week's exercises
Exercise 1 โ The compassionate letter
Write a letter to yourself as if you were your best friend talking to you about your creative life.
Notice the difference between how you talk to yourself and how you'd talk to a friend in the same situation.
Exercise 2 โ Perfectionism inventory
List 5 creative projects you have abandoned or half-finished because of perfectionism.
For each one, ask: would I be okay with it if it were merely good โ not perfect? What would change if I gave myself permission to finish imperfect?
Exercise 3 โ Plan for a dry season
Decide today how you'll treat yourself the next time the desert comes. What practices will you keep? What will you forgive yourself?
Write a small protocol of self-care. Read it when you need it.
Affirmations
Choose 3 of these affirmations and write them every morning after your Morning Pages.
"I deserve the same compassion I give others."
"Resting is part of creating."
"Done matters more than perfect."
"My creative cycle is wise."
